Old World Wine Regions
The phrases "old" and "new" don't refer to the age of a wine, but rather the region where a wine is grown and produced. The division is straightforward. Old World refers to countries and regions in Europe, where modern winemaking began.
Old World Wine
Any server, sommelier or wine connoisseur can benefit from learning more about where wines come from. It's the place that gives the wine its terroir. Below you'll find maps of the main Old World wine countries, with key wine growing regions highlighted — not all of them, but enough to get you started. Finally, we've detailed major varieties of grapes grown in each region. Remember, other permitted grapes may exist in these regions.
